Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of the article is an assessment of the hazard and the causes of natural phenomena such as avalanches and landslides in the mountains during severe earthquakes occurred in the past in different countries of the world (United States, Peru, China, Italy, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan). The aim of this study is to assess the hazards and their consequences on hydro-technical structures.

Methods. Statistical data on the effect on hydro-technical structures of the consequences of natural disasters and severe earthquakes occurred in the world are analyzed. The factors of their initiation are given.

Findings. Cases when the earthquakes cause the damage of dams and large reservoirs of both man-made and natural origin, located in seismically active areas of the Central Asian region and their influence on the consequences (avalanches, landslides, displacement of rock masses), i.e. on the extent of the damage are given.

Application field of research. The obtained results should be considered in design, construction and operation of important structures in seismic regions in order to reduce the after-effects.

Conclusions. A number of recommendations for safe and reliable operation of hydro-technical structures in seismic regions are offered.
